Igbo leaders meet Buhari, demand Kanu’s release, Signs petitions.

Igbo leaders under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Greats have appealed to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to ensure the release of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group led by First Republic parliamentarian and former Minister of Aviation, 93-year-old Mbazulike Amaechi, made the appeal during a visit to the State House, Abuja, on Friday.

Other members of the delegation were former Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, former President of Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike and Tagbo Amaechi.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Buhari while responding to the Igbo leaders, stated that though the demand was heavy, he would consider it.

Buhari said unconditional release of the IPOB leader, who is currently standing trial, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.

The President said, “You’ve made an extremely difficult demand on me as the leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious. In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the judiciary.

“God has spared you (referring to the ex-minister), and given you a clear head at this age, with a very sharp memory. A lot of people half your age are confused already. But the demand you made is heavy. I will consider it.”

During the meeting, the nonagenarian described the situation in the South-East as “painful and pathetic,” lamenting businesses had collapsed while education was crumbling amid fears.

He promised that if Kanu was released to him as the only First Republic minister still alive, “he (Kanu) would no longer say the things he had been saying.”

Meanwhile IPOB has sought the intervention of the United Kingdom, urging the British Government to embark on an “aggressive diplomatic engagement” to ensure Kanu was released unconditionally. ‘‘in the shortest possible time.’’

It also alleged that over 300 IPOB members were being held across detention camps nationwide.

The lead lawyer to IPOB, Chief Ifeanyi Ejiofor, stated these in a letter to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria dated November 17

The petition read in part, “The British Government is respectfully urged to do everything to protect the life of its national, our client, who, from every indication, is gripped by the vice-like, vengeful, and unrelenting stranglehold of the present Federal Government of Nigeria. Britain cannot afford to shirk the obligation it owes our client.

Similarly, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has condemned the condition Kanu was allegedly subjected to at the detention facility of the Department of the State Services.

The spokesman for Ohanaeze, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, who spoke to our correspondent in Enugu, noted, “Ohanaeze advises that Nnamdi Kanu should be handled with care and whatever is happening should fit into the global best practices; trial of Nnamdi Kanu, condition he stays should be made open.”

This is just as the Abia State High Court sitting in Umuahia issued an order restraining security agencies from deploying their personnel to the court premises each time Kanu’s case is being heard.

The court, presided over by Justice Benson Anya, also restrained them from arresting anybody who attends the court to witness Kanu’s proceedings.

The order was prompted by over 100 security agents who cordoned off the premises of the Abia State High Court in Umuahia at the resumed hearing of Kanu’s human rights suit against the Federal Government and seven others filed by his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

The suit is aimed at challenging Kanu’s abduction in Kenya and his extraordinary rendition to Nigeria.

The matter was adjourned to December 10, 2021 for adoption of processes and a hearing on the substantive application seeking Kanu’s release from detention and his repatriation to Britain.

Meanwhile, IPOB has alleged a plot by the Federal Government to kill Kanu in detention and declare a state of emergency in ‘Biafraland.’

Buhari govt waging war against IPOB, journalists – Falana

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of waging a war on members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and journalists.

Falana made the accusation in a statement released on Sunday.

According to him, the government treats bandits, who are not different from Boko Haram terrorists, with kid gloves.

He accused the Federal Government of “deliberately refusing” to declare bandits as terrorists.

Part of his statement in part reads, “For reasons best known to the Federal Government the criminal elements who are responsible for the brutal killing of innocent people and abduction of thousands of people including primary school pupils in the North West Zone are called bandits and not terrorists.

“While the Federal Government is waging a full-scale war against the Shiites, IPOB members and journalists have continued to treat the so-called bandits with kid gloves.

“It is undoubtedly clear that the criminal elements who abduct unarmed Nigerians, kill them or release them after collecting ransom in millions of Naira are terrorists.”

Falana stressed that these bandits who attack police stations and attack innocent Nigerians are terrorists and should be declared so.

“The criminal elements who attack correctional centres and release inmates therein are terrorists. The criminal elements who destroy government properties or public facilities are terrorists,” the statement added.

Shutting down South-East won’t free Nnamdi Kanu, go to Abuja – Ohanaeze to IPOB

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has advised the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to jettison its plan to impose further sit-at-home order on the residents of South-East.

IPOB had in a statement by its spokesman, Comrade Emma Powerful threatened that the zone would be on a one month lockdown if its leader, Mazi Nnandi Kanu was not produced in court for arraignment in October.

But reacting, Ohanaeze Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro said such a move would further erode the people’s confidence in the Biafra group.

He said the “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide are committed to providing a political solution for the release of the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from custody,” adding “any other procedure (including shutting down the southeast for one month) will not get results.

He said the sit-at-home was designed by enemies of Ndigbo “to see to the collapse and destruction of the southeast economy.”

The Ohanaeze scribed advised that “the best approach before the IPOB leadership is to mobilize the disciples of Nnamdi Kanu in millions to take advantage of the October 21st court trial and massively take over the streets of Abuja, peacefully, without confrontation with security agencies so that the International community will intervene and convince the Federal Government to do the needful.

“If 60 million IPOB members as claimed by the leadership can storm Abuja, they will be forced to produce Nnamdi Kanu before the Abuja High Court.

“IPOB should face Abuja and get the required results, as Ndigbo are sympathetic to their causes since the Federal Government is pampering the Boko Haram terrorists and bandits. It introduced secret programs for the secret rehabilitation of Boko Haram terrorists but uses full military operations in the South against agitators fighting against the killer herdsmen and government policies that promote nepotism and Fulanization.

“IPOB will gradually lose Igbo support if they continue to make things difficult for Ndigbo, especially with the continuous denial of not being accountable for the various scandals and crimes committed against humanity by the so-called cultists, who hide under the sit-at-home orders to perpetrate evil.”

IPOB dismisses rumours of another Sit-at-home on Friday

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has dismissed rumours making the rounds that it has ordered another Sit-at-home for Friday September, 17, 2021.

IPOB in a statement by its Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, urged people to disregard the deceptive rumour, saying that some people are trying to incite the South East people against the group.

IPOB statement read in part, “We have since suspended the Monday weekly sit-at-home, and we wish to make it categorically that we are not planning any sit-at-home as being speculated, there is no other sit-at-home order on Friday.

“We understand that some miscreants living in Europe, claiming what they are not, sponsored by overzealous politicians to destroy Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, are working with the security agencies to ensure that they succeed in torturing innocent Biafrans in the name of enforcing a non-existent sit-at-home

“We have set up a taskforce to deal with such hooligans. My fellow Biafrans there is no crack in IPOB and there is no sit-at-home order again this week until the day our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will appear in court.

“Our people must therefore disregard any statement that is not from our Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful..Our intention is different from those agents making statements on IPOB order, but they will soon regret their actions.

“IPOB has not order any sit-at-home on Friday because our people have suffered a lot following the one we suspended, but they were made by hoodlums to continue to observe.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, says the Biafra agitator will soon be free.

The lawyer gave the assurance on Monday after the court session.

The federal government failed to produce the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader in court.

The new counsel, Mohammed Abubakar had announced that Kanu could not be produced due to logistics reasons.

“We will visit him again within the next 48 hours. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom sooner than may be expected”, Ejiofor added.

Adeyanju reveals why DSS refused to bring Nnamdi Kanu to court

Deji Adeyanju, convener of Concerned Nigerian, has suggested the reason why the Department of State Services, DSS, failed to bring Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to court on Monday.

Adeyanju suggested that the Nigerian government has no case against Kanu, hence the failure to bring Kanu to court.

In a tweet, the activist stressed that the “show” was to keep Kanu in DSS custody indefinitely.

According to Adeyanju: “BREAKING: Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial till October because of failure of DSS to bring him to court.

“There’s no case in the first place. All the show is just to keep him in custody indefinitely.”

Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court, had on Monday adjourned the trial of Kanu till October.

The adjournment was due to DSS’ failure to produce Kanu in court.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS custody since he was rearrested and renditioned to Nigeria, a few weeks ago.
